Detroit Police Departments Verified Alarm Response has Started

Verified Alarm Response

As of August 22th, 2011 the new program that was short in development and quickly put into place has officially started. After being delayed from  on August 15th, 2011 (one week after the original date that it was supposed to take place).  See Document

As detailed in the document there was little time for the many Alarm Companies that service the Metro Detroit vast area a chance to provide their customers with alternatives.  The brief delay (one week) was in-part an attempt to provide Alarm Companies a chance to brain storm alternatives.  The short delay provided  commercial business owners an opportunity for them to draw straws to see who gets to verify alarm calls, as well giving residents with alarm systems the opportunity to buy antacid tablets as they worry about their safety.

“The verified alarm response is new policy of not responding to burglar alarms unless security companies can verify the need for an officer. However, officers will be sent to a building where an alarm wasn’t verified if it is a government building or part of the city’s critical infrastructure, a panic alarm, robbery/hold up alarm, an alarm at a firearms dealer or at an Underwriters Laboratories site, police said.”  Detroit police’s scaled down alarm response strategy begins today.

The new Verified Alarm Response policy has many left  in the dark and skeptical of why exactly they are paying taxes if they can’t count on the Detroit Police to response for their alarms.

There are alternatives to having the Detroit Police responding to alarms.  SavIsa Security has been providing alarm response to commercial and residential customers for over 20+ years, with over 44 years in the Security and Investigative Businesses for Investigations  click here for their website.   However the calls have been pouring in and their development is quick to undertake the task as the new alarm response division for the over tasked Detroit Police Department.

SavIsa Security has an established patrol network through out the Metro Detroit area and is equipped with skilled and experienced Alarm Response / Patrol Drivers with similar technology that each Detroit Police Department cruiser has.Alarm Response BCI Security Patrol cruiser InteriorBCI Security Patrol cruiser

The cost of their service is relatively low considering the alternative, SavIsa Security requires a monthly retainer of $25.00 first month waived when using a credit card to sign-up with a one year agreement and $35.00 per alarm dispatch. Don’t be fooled by imitations, with SavIsa Security you get exactly what you sign up for (Guaranteed Alarm Response)

Detroit Police will NOT respond to Alarms

Today the Detroit Police Department announced they would not respond to alarms unless the alarms are verified by a Security Patrol Guard, homeowner, or if the building is monitored by audio or video. If audio or video is the source, it must be recorded and saved.

“According to the memo, sent to alarm companies and signed by Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee, 98 percent of alarms handled by the DPD are false.”

What does this mean for your business? It means you need to hire a Security Company to handle Alarm Response. Our Sister Company, BCI Security, provides Alarm Response with Marked Security Vehicles and Knowledgeable Patrol Officers that respond to alarms within 15 minutes.  44 years experience in the Investigations and Security Business.  BCI has an established patrol network canvasing the Metro Detroit Area. Michigan Concealed Weapons CCW / CPL Law Change 10 Years Later

Published by Crystal on August 2nd, 2011 - in Concealed Pistol License

Interesting statistical article about CCW / CPL permits within Michigan after the law change in 2001.  The article includes a map showing CCW registration by County, requirements for obtaining a Michigan Concealed Pistol License, and where a Michigan Concealed Pistol License holder is not allowed to carry and other related links.

Over a quarter of a million (276,000)  CCW / CPL holders in Michigan or four out of every 100 eligible adults in Michigan are licensed.

Ten years after Michigan made it much easier for its citizens to get a license to carry a concealed gun, the predictions of widespread lawless behavior and bloodshed have failed to materialize. Before July 1, 2001 eligible applicants had to prove why they needed to carry a gun for protection.  Now, a nominally sane adult without a felony record can apply for a Michigan Concealed Pistol License for exact requirements visit the Michigan State Police website

The reformers wanted Michigan to join the growing number of states where carrying a concealed gun is the right of anyone and the opponents predicted gun-toting, trigger-happy citizens loose on the streets.  10 years later, both sides of the debate admit they cant see why there was huge debate in the first place.

Managing Passwords with KeePass Ver. 2.16

Published by Crystal on July 28th, 2011 - in Computer Security

KeePass an open source password manager

KeePass

Everything we do on the internet or on our computers requires a password, and a lot of them tell us how we must create our passwords which is even more frustrating. I have several dozen passwords and remembering them all is close to impossible. A lot of times we only get a few tries before being locked out of a site because of incorrect entries. Nothing makes it worse than having to call your mortgage company to reset your password, which really defeats the purpose of using the internet to simplify the payment process. I know of people who have notebooks with all their passwords written down. Which is even worse, your password exposed to anyone who stumbles upon this book. KeePass is a free, open source, light-weight and easy-to-use password manager for Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and it also works with most mobile devices. Operating System Requirements: Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7

Today you need to remember many passwords. You need a password for the Windows network logon, your e-mail account, your website’s FTP password, online passwords (like website member accounts), etc. etc. etc. The list is endless. Also, you should use different passwords for each account. Because if you use only one password everywhere and someone gets this password you have a problem… A serious problem. The thief would have access to your e-mail account, website, etc. Unimaginable.

KeePass is a free open source password manager, which helps you to manage your passwords in a secure way. You can store your passwords in highly-encrypted databases, which can only be unlocked with one master password. So you only have to remember one single master password or select the key file to unlock the whole database. The databases are encrypted using the best and most secure encryption algorithms currently known (AES and Twofish).

KeePass is really free, and more than that: it is open source (OSI certified).

Alarm Company Ratings: Rate Your Alarm Company

Alarm Companies

Through the years of my profession {close to thirty years}, I have had the opportunity to work with almost all of the alarm companies within the state of Michigan.

I have to say some are good, some are adequate, some just suck and some are off the scale of greatness.

I personally have responded and dealt with these companies either on a one on one basis, or through my associates.  I have responded to thousands of alarm calls and tens of thousands through my associates and there is nothing worse than responding to a burglar alarm call with inadequate information such as uninformed operators, under trained operators, lack of imperative information such as location of building and zone of the alarm. (It’s true)

When responding to burglar alarm calls there are several things that go through your mind:

(1) is this an actual (B&E) breaking and entering,

(2) Will I see my family again,

(3) What is the state of my customer’s property?

I’m going to be grading alarm companies on a scale of (A,B,C,D,E,F)

Please, if you have an alarm system or have had, leave a comment and let me know your own experience with alarm companies!

This information will help people make informed decisions when choosing who to hire as their Alarm Company!

Thank You!

Create a FREE Child ID Kit for Emergencies and Amber Alerts

Published by Crystal on July 13th, 2011 - in Parents and Children

You should make an emergency Child ID Kit in case of emergency!

It’s free to do so at Radio Amber, the Amber Alert Website and system.

God forbid anything happen to our children, but you want to be prepared just in case!

The link is at the top of their page, but here is a direct link to the form.

Once you create the kit, you can save it to your computer, thumb drives etc. I like the thumb drive idea because you can keep it with you on your key chain or upload it to Google documents so you can access it from anywhere.

How to Protect Your Computer Security on the Internet

Published by Crystal on July 10th, 2011 - in Computer Security

Almost everyone believes that when it comes to Internet Security once antivirus software is installed all is good; this is a huge misconception that many antivirus software vendors would like you to believe! That if you buy their top of the line software suites and all is safe (NOT TRUE).

Threats and infections can come from the most unexpected places.  One example my daughter’s Nintendo DS had become my dogs chew toy, so my wife typed into Google “DS Repair” and clicked on the returned search result; next thing that happened was her computer was infected with a virus resulting in a complete restore of her operating system.

You should still install Anti-Virus software (read my recommendations on free antivirus software.)

First Recommendation: Always keep antivirus software definitions up to date.
Always scan every foreign file brought into your system: all downloads, attachments, and files from USB drives. To do this, save the file then right click on it and select “scan file with”.  I personally scan everything, even if I know the person whose file it is; better to be safe than sorry!

Along with your Antivirus software, you should keep your Operating System and Browser Software up to date. Security holes are constantly being exploited and patches are constantly being distributed: Stay Updated!!!

Never load a program in which you are not aware of its manufacturer or purpose, question yourself if you need this program; if you believe you do need the software, always create a restore point before install.  Do your research on the program, does the program have a valid digital signature or any bad reviews?

Second Recommendation: Stay out of the red light district of porn.  More times than not, I will be asked to recover a computer from various types of attacks primarily because they stray into the red light district of porn sites.

Third Recommendation: Downloading either pirated software or other types of copyrighted material, you can eventually expect to be infected. Nothing is free my friends.  Don’t get me wrong torrent sites and file sharing can be very useful, providing a wealth of useful and legitimate material. Tread lightly and again always scan your downloads!

Forth Recommendation:  Always Backup regularly! With Windows 7, you can use the built-in backup program to save an image backup on an external hard drive or media. With a Mac can also create the same type of backup routine using Mac’s Time Machine.   Also, it is good investment to purchase an external hard drive. Most now come with very simple backup programs and their prices have dropped considerably. A few well reviewed recommendations.

Fifth Recommendation: Spam You should never trust the sender of an e-mail if you do not know the sender or did not request the information or ask to be put on their mailing list. Spam filtering services are a very effective and do a good job reducing Spam by having it bypass your inbox. The spam filters can be taught and adapt to changing threats. Depending on the spam filter you use, the better chance you won’t receive fraudulent emails. Spam is the primary delivery methods of malware, financial scams and phishing attacks.

Spam is the use of  email systems (including most broadcast media, digital delivery systems) to send unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately. While the most widely recognized form of spam is e-mail spam, the term is applied to similar abuses in other media: instant messaging spam, Usenet newsgroup spam, Web search engine spam, spam in blogs, wiki spam, online classified ads spam, mobile phone messaging spam, Internet forum spam, junk fax transmissions, social networking spam, television advertising and file sharing network spam.

Spamming remains economically viable because advertisers have no operating costs beyond the management of their mailing lists”

Sixth Recommendation: Don’t lose your cool or panic.  Don’t do anything drastic until you know what threat you’re dealing with.  Don’t be afraid to contact someone for assistance (friend or family).  Don’t purchase any tools (pop ups) that are advertised by your threat; you can tell it is a threat if you click the “x” and the pop up will not close and is persistent. Any threat that gets you to purchase their software is not a legitimate software vendor. Most of the time they hijack your computer and want you to purchase your own documents back!

Seventh Recommendation: NEVER, EVER provide passwords to anyone. NEVER, EVER provide your financial information to any un-trusted sources.  If your uncertain it’s better to call with your financial purchase.  A Little Common sense goes along way!

All current browsers have indicators or visual icons within the address bar whether you are in a trusted area or a secure connection. SSL  Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), are cryptographic protocols that provide communication security over the Internet TLS and SSL encrypt the segments of network connections above the Transport Layer, using asymmetric cryptography for privacy and a keyed message authentication code for message reliability, providing SSL”

Identity Theft and Steps to Prevent it

Published by Crystal on July 1st, 2011 - in Home Safety

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has reported that for the 11th straight year ID Theft is at the top of its list. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) received 1.34 million consumer complaints during 2010, with ID theft complaints making up 19 percent of the reports.

Definition of Identity theft: Identity theft occurs when your personal identifying information such as: your name, Social Security Number (SSN), credit card number(s) and documents are used without your permission to commit fraudulent transactions or other crimes while creating a phony persona with the criminal intent of financial gain.

Steps for Identity Theft Safeguarding:

Shred all documents containing your personal information

Don’t leave receipts at ATMs or store checkouts

Carry only necessary identification with you and avoid carrying your Social Security card

Never leave a computer in the middle of your online session

When you’re done with an online session, always log off the website

Never give out your passwords; If other people have access to your computer, clear your browser’s cache (this removes copies of recently accessed web pages stored temporarily on your computer)
